I sooo need to relax and recharge!

It's been awhile, so I'd thought I link up with Casey today.

If you teach third grade Social Studies, you have to get this book! It is an adorable little book about Congress and tells a great story on how a bill becomes a law.
Squeaker of the House....ha!

One of my little girls drew this for me at recess the other day.
Is it a bad thing that my kiddos have noticed my addiction to caffeine???
I'm choosing to focus on the fact that I look super skinny and have apparently have impeccable style :)

Along with our study of the government, we've been talking about the executive branch and, of course, the president. We don't have a ton of time to do fun crafts in third grade, but I managed to sneak in these adorable Obama crafts along with their executive branch writing.

I am so in love with the new Jamberry styles, yall! Especially the holiday-themed wraps.
Each week in October, I'll be sporting different Halloween nails.
This week....candy corn!
Want to check out all the different holiday styles?
Shop here!

I got two sweet little gifts today.
One of my sweeties brought me this tiny pumpkin.
She knows how much I adore fall :)
Another sweetie told me she was at Wal-Mart and saw this big bin of duct tape.
"I know you already have peacock duct tape, Mrs. Lemacks, but....you can never have enough!"
Talk about filling my bucket!

What have YOU been up to this week???

TOGA, TOGA!

Hey yall!

It is officially my favorite month of the year!
Hello October!!!

I'm so ready for the breezy fall weather, but apparently Georgia hasn't gotten the memo. Its still almost 90 degrees round these parts!

But that's okay, because we had nice weather yesterday at our Mini Greek Olympics.
We've been studying Ancient Greece and the influence it has had on our country for the past couple of weeks.
We talked about their government, architecture, and of course....sports!
As a culminating activity for our unit, the third grade hosted a Mini Greek Olympics.

I decided to go all out and sport a toga for the day.
A couple of my teammates dressed up, too!

We had four events.

Javelin Throw (pool noodles)

Discus Toss (Frisbees)

Foot Race (we did a relay race for this one, but I forgot to snap a picture)

and a Chariot Race (scooter boards)

Our winners received traditional olive leaf wreaths (of course!), but we also had some really cool "medals" that a parent made.

Isn't that awesome? Our mascot is the lion, so he added an emblem to the medal. So creative!

It was such a blast and really brought the Olympics to life for the kiddos!
And I've decided I'm going to wear a toga about once a week from now on...I got so many dang compliments from all the students!

Now I leave you with some pictures of adorable thirdsters in togas...
(on a side note, I am now an expert toga-tier! I tied about 234 togas yesterday :)

Another Day in 1st Grade

Hey yall!

The year is winding down yall.
Only 23 days left...eek!

We are in full force finish-out-first-grade mode, so I thought I would pop in and share some of what we've been up to these past couple weeks!

We wrote clown stories and made these adorable clowns for our study of diphthong ow/ou.

For our study on economics, we made these goods and services flapbooks.

On the inside, they wrote whether each job provided goods or services.

We also wrote about what we want to be when we grow up and whether that job provides goods or services.

In science, we've been learning all about sound!
After learning about pitch, we composed and played songs on glass bottles filled with water.

Since today was Earth Day, we wrote all about how to keep our Earth clean.

You can pick up this little craftivity here.
Then we put our words into action and cleaned up the playground!

The next few weeks are going to fly by, I'm sure, so forgive me if I'm a little scarce!
Time to put the petal to the metal, yall!

Five for Friday!

Hey yall! Happy Friday!

This Friday is an extremely happy Friday, because I'm at home in my pjs! Today was a furlough day, and even though my pocketbook isn't happy about it, the rest of me sure is!

I've spent the last two days in parent conferences, so today was a much needed break :)
And since I'm still in my pjs at 1:30, I thought I would just go ahead and link up with Casey this week.

1. We've been studying landforms in Social Studies. We've made flapbooks, sang songs, and played games to help us learn the different landforms. But my kiddos favorite landform activity? Landform cookies!

Sugar cookie with white frosting for the base, blue frosting along the side to represent coasts, graham cracker crumbles for the desert, green sprinkles for the plains, candy corn mountains, and a Rolo plateau. This was the day I officially became the "best teacher ever!"

2. For fire safety week, I assigned some homework where the students had to talk with their family about creating a meeting place if there is ever a fire in the home. They were to draw a picture of their meeting place on the back.

Haha! Don't you just love first grade spelling?

3. This week, we've been learning all about digraphs. The very first pack I ever purchased on TPT was Cara's Digraph Kids pack and I still use it every year!

Annnnnd I just realized I spelled chipmunk wrong.....teacher fail!
4. I officially started my last class for my Ed.S this week! The class meets once a week from 5-9:45...ugh! But at least I get to spend those 5 hours in my university's new $500K Mac lab each week!

5. My teacher buddy texted me this the other day. This is definitely fitting for my chatty class this year!

Alright folks, I'm off to enjoy more pj/couch time :)

Nice to Meet You, Mr. Appleseed

Hey yall! Happy Friday!

We have had a fun and exciting week learning all about folktales. We learned about Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and everyone's favorite....Johnny Appleseed! I love that our state Social Studies standards include these fun folktales, especially since Mr. Appleseed is so much fun to learn about!

We started out by reading this book

and watching the Brain Pop Jr. video on Johnny.

We taste tested 4 different kinds of apples and graphed our favorites.

Granny Smith was the winner, but I was totally pulling for the Golden Delicious....yum!

We made applesauce and wrote about the process.

Best. Applesauce. Ever.

We brainstormed some facts and then wrote about Johnny.

All of the above activities (including the recipe for the world's best applesauce!) came from Katie's (Teacher to the CoreApples and Appleseed unit.

Seriously, one of my favorite purchases this year! Talk about integration!!!

After learning all about him, Mr. Appleseed himself came to visit and read us a story!

They were over the moon excited....just look at those faces!!! Everyone wanted a hug...and one sly girl went in for a kiss on the cheek! My sweet hubby is so supportive and such a good sport about these kinds of things. You might remember, he dressed up as a leprechaun for my kiddos last year!

The funniest part was hearing all the questions my littles had for him...and he had no problem playing along!

Student: Did you plant an apple tree in my backyard?
Hubs: Maybe...is your house the one with the black roof?
Student: Yeah! And a fence!
Hubs: Yep...I was there!

My teaching buddies and I were rolling! Another student asked him about his pet wolf (which one of our stories talked about) and he told them it was tied up outside. Ha!

It was probably one of the most fun we've had this year. What did yall do to celebrate?
